01-06-20 REGULAR COUNCIL MEETINGREORGANIZATIONAL MEETING OF THE AGAWAM CITY COUNCIL Minutes dated January 6, 2020 Meeting was called to order by the eldest member of the City Council, Councilor Smith, at 7:00pm in the Auditorium at the Agawam Junior High School, 1305 Springfield Street, Feeding Hills. Item A. Roll Call ROLL CALL – 10 PRESENT, 1 ABSENT Roll Call was taken with the following councilors present: George Bitzas, Cecilia Calabrese, Paul Cavallo, Christopher Johnson, Dino Mercadante, Robert Rossi, Rosemary Sandlin, Gerald Smith, Anthony Suffriti and Mario Tedeschi. Councilor Letellier was absent. With ten present, there was a quorum. Item B. Moment of Silence and the Pledge of Allegiance. There was a moment of silence and the Pledge of Allegiance. Item C. Elections 1. TE-2020-1 - Election of City Council President Councilor Smith stated that the floor was open for nominations. Councilor Calabrese placed the name of Christopher Johnson into nomination which was seconded by several councilors. Motion was made to close nominations which was seconded by several members. The vote was 10 for CHRISTOPHER JOHNSON, 1 ABSENT (Councilor Letellier) making Councilor Johnson President of the City Council. Councilor Smith asked if Councilor Johnson would like to say a few words. Council President Johnson expressed his thanks to everyone for their continued support and for their faith in him. He promised to continue to work as hard as he can to continue to make the Council as effective as they have been for the last several years. He looks forward to another two productive years working with the Council, the Mayor and the School Committee. 2. TE-2020-2 - Election of City Council Vice President Councilor Smith opened the floor to nominations. Councilor Mercadante placed the name of Cecilia Calabrese into nomination and was seconded by Council President Johnson. Motion to close nominations made by Councilor Sandlin and seconded by Councilor Johnson. Councilors Smith declared the nominations closed. The vote was 10 for CECILIA CALABRESE, 1 ABSENT (Councilor Letellier) making Councilor Calabrese Vice President of the City Council. Councilor Smith asked if Councilor Calabrese would like to say a few words. Council Vice President Calabrese said it was an honor to be part of the leadership team with Mayor Sapelli and Council President Johnson. She is really looking forward to the next two years as we will have a lot on our plates. She appreciates their confidence and support as a member of the leadership team for the Town of Agawam. Item D. Selection of new seat assignments Councilor Smith asked Barbara to pass out seat selection numbers. Item E. Adjournment. Councilor Smith asked for a Motion to adjourn which was moved and seconded around the house.
