RAM Current definition of this treatment standard, as revised in The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, 1995: Restoration is defined as the act or process of accurately depicting the form, features, and character of a property as it appeared at a particular period of time by means of the removal of features from other periods in its history and reconstruction of missing features from the restoration period. The limited and sensitive upgrading of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and other code-required work to make properties functional is appropriate within a restoration project.] The Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, 1995: Preservation is defined as the act or process of applying measures necessary to sustain the existing form, integrity. and materials of an historic property. Work, including preliminary measures to protect and stabilize the property. generally focuses upon the ongoing maintenance and repair of historic materials and features rather than extensive replacement and new construction. New exterior additions are not within the scope of this treatment; however, the limited and sensitive upgrading of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and other code- required work to make properties functional is appropriate within a preservation project.] Page I of 1 Deborah Dachos From: MarionE32@aol.com Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2012 3:18 PM To: Deborah Dachos Subject: (no subject) Ms. Dachos Thank you for the opportunity to express our hope that the School Street Barn will be preserved for the future of Agawam history. Based on the building size and accessibility, it seems to me the building could be built out to accomodate office space for the Agawam Cultural Council. This gives them a permanent space to meet in and interview possible summer series performers or grant providers. Along these lines, some of the space could be converted to an art gallery and small performing arts center(dance, music, art, book presentations) or an arts and crafts area for our youth. These activities can include paid instructional classes for art, jewelry making, basic carpentry instruction, weaving, leather crafts, scrap booking, etc. Anything that our old arts and crafts department used to provide during the summer when I was a kid. I t could become a visitors center and historical center like you see on the Cape, 91 N in Vermont. Hand out maps of interest to local shops and fairs as well as be a hub for a farmers market in the summer. This and the instructional classes could generate some income to offset the operation of the utilities, etc. Lastly, it's a handy spot for sports sign ups and sports clinics since some of these activities will be held right on the adjoining fields. I hope some or all of these ideas can be adopted.
