Cohen, Mayor ca Town of Agawam sa 36 Main Street Agawam, MA 01001 Dear Mayor Cohen: I recently learned from talking to Joseph Fitzpatrick that there will be at least one vacancy on the Agawam Housing Commission after January 1, 2014. Please consider me for appointment to the Commission. I have been active for thirteen years with the Massachusetts Senior Action Council, which has always been concerned about the quantity and quality of affordable housing in the state. During my five years as MSAC President I worked with a committee of housing advocates and realtors called at the request of the legislature to produce an acceptable bill dealing with expiring use housing. MSAC had become alarmed at the loss of thousands of units of affordable housing that had been lost because the owners had either sold their property or converted it to market rate. In working on this issue,I learned much about the needs of low income people, especially seniors and the disabled, for decent affordable housing, and also about the concerns of realtors who no longer wished to be responsible for owning and maintaining government subsidized housing. We finally worked out a compromise bill, which did not preserve all affordable housing, but did require owners who were planning to sell their property to let the state know a year in advance so that a new owner could be found who would be willing to maintain the property as affordable housing. Mass.Senior Action Council was recognized by the legislature for our role Inputting the bill together and fighting to get it passed, and we were invited by the Governor to the signing of the bill at the State House. I would like to make use of what I learned in the process to benefit the needs of low income seniors and others in Agawam. I have resided in Agawam for thirteen years, and have served most of those years as treasurer of the Mansion Woods Condominium Association. I believe thafAt is a for Ir me to offer my services to the town. Please consider me for a position on the Agawam I.usmA- Commission. Vti' 1 V ry truly yours, l John W.
