TR-2016-18 BANDSHELL DARCY B. DAVIS JR. �__.�_ -- -- _ -----r- _--_�..... _�_____ _. _ _ -- -- `� �. TR-2016-18 A RESOLUTION TO NAME THE BANDSHELL AT SCHOOL STREET PARK IN HONOR OF DARCY B.DAVIS JR. (SPONSORED BY Mayor Richard A Cohen) WHEREAS,Darcy B.Davis Jr.began his musical career at age 12 as a member of the Royal Blue Pioneer Boy Scout Drum Corps in North Adams,MA;and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr.served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Corps and as leader of an Air Force Reserve Band for several years;and WHEREAS, Darcy B.Davis Jr.was the featured bugle soloist for the five time national champion Lt. Norman Pierce Corps,the group named Corps of the Decade(1950's) by the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame;and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr.was named Individual National Soprano Champion in 1950 and 1953 while a member of the LT. Norman Pierce Corps;and WHEREAS, Danny 13.Davis Jr. began serving,in 19SS, as the Agawam Public Schools Band Director for 35 years in addition to teaching general music, music theory,music history,and musical theater;and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr. taught general music studies,music theory,music history, musical theater, directed bands and choruses, produced twenty major musicals and directed both the Agawam Summer and Agawam Community bands;and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr. directed and led the Agawam High School Marching Mohawks and the Color Guard to receiving the highest honors at numerous national and international music festivals and competitions;and WHEREAS, Darcy B.Davis Jr.directed and led the Agawam Marching Band,which was selected to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the world premiere of the Movie The Music Man in Mason City, Iowa after winning a state wide competition;and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr.was named Director of Music in Agawam in 1972;and Whereas,Darcy B. Davis Jr.was elected to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 1987; and WHEREAS, Darcy B.Davis Jr.was named Massachusetts Distinguished Educator of the Year and was presented with the highest honor given for service in music education:The Massachusetts Music Educators Association's Lowell Mason Award of 1990;and WHEREAS, Darcy B.Davis Jr. produced the musical tribute"The Songs of Agawam" in celebration of Agawam's 2005 Sesquicentennial;and WHEREAS, Darcy B.Davis Jr.served as Parade Marshall for the Agawam Sesquicentennial Parade; and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr.was inducted into the Bugles'Hall of Fame in 2012;and WHEREAS, Darcy B. Davis Jr. received the"Friends of the Big E" award for his many years of service at the Eastern States Exposition;and WHEREAS,Darcy B. Davis Jr. is listed in First Chair,a National Band Association yearbook of the nation's finest band directors;and WHEREAS,Darcy B. Davis Jr. has volunteered countless hours at the Agawam Senior Center organizing it's musical library as well as directing the Center's musical combo and chorus programs; and WHEREAS,Darcy B. Davis has organized a museum showcasing his vast personal collection of Agawam High School Band and Drum Corps musical memorabilia;and WHEREAS,Darcy B. Davis Jr. has devoted his life to music and musical education in the Town of Agawam and has served as inspiration for countless student musicians; and WHEREAS Darcy B. Davis has humbly and justifiably earned the title of'Agawam's Music Man"; NOW,THEREFORE,the Agawam City Council hereby resolves that the new band shell, located at School Street Park, be dedicated and named in honor of Mr. Darcy B. Davis moved to Agawam in 1955,and served the Agawam Public Schools as Band Director for the next 35 years; WHEREAS, During that time, Mr.Davis taught general music,music theory, music history, musical theater, directed bands and choruses,produced twenty major musicals, and directed the Agawam Summer Band and Agawam Community Band; WHEREAS, Under his direction,the Agawam High School Marching Mohawks and Color Guard received highest honors at numerous national and international music festivals and competitions; WHEREAS, In 1962, Mr. Davis and the Agawam High School Marching Band were selected to represent the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at the world premier of the movie "The Music Man"in Mason City; Iowa,after winning a statewide competition; • WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was named Director of Music in Agawam in 1972; WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was elected to the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 19$7; WHEREAS, Upon his retirement from the Agawam Public Schools,the Agawam High School Band Room was named in his honor. WHEREAS, In 199o,Mr. Davis was named Massachusetts Distinguished Music Educator of the Year and presented with the Massachusetts Music Educators Association's Lowell Mason Award, its highest honor given for service in music education; WHEREAS, In celebration of Agawam's 2005 Sesquicentennial,Mr. Davis produced the musical tribute"The Songs of Agawam;" WHEREAS, Mr. Davis served as Parade Marshall of the Agawam Sesquicentennial Parade; WHEREAS, Mr. Davis was inducted into the Buglers Hall of Fame in 2012; WHEREAS, Mr. Davis spent many years coordinating the daily parades at the Eastern States Exposition;and received the"Friend of the Big E"award from that organisation; WHEREAS, He is listed in"First Chair,"a National Band Association yearbook of the nation's finest band directors; WHEREAS, Mr.Davis was a member of the Springfield Marksmen Alumni for more than two decades; WHEREAS, While a volunteer at the Agawam Senior Center,Mr.Davis started an instrumental combo and chorus;while at the same time organising a music library at the center; WHEREAS, Mr. Davis has organised a museum showcasing his vast personal collection of Agawam High School Band and drum corps musical memorabilia; WHEREAS, Mr. Davis has devoted his life to music and music education in the Town of Agawam,and served as inspiration for countless student musicians, and; WHEREAS, Mr.Davis has humbly and justifiably earned the title of"Agawam's Music Man;" NOW THEREFORE, We the undersigned,do hereby request of the Town of Agawam,that the new bandshell located at School Street Park be dedicated in honor of Mr.Darcy B.Davis Jr. during the Agawam High School Band Parents Associaton Bandathon to take place there on Saturday,28 May 2016.
