Walking Park Eagle Service Project ---Andrew Jensen --- Boy Scout Troop 82
Overview:
With the creation of the bike trail in Agawam, on River Road,
a walking track at Borgatti would be a great integration! If you are coming from
Route 57, Borgatti Field is located on the left hand side. The walking park would
be at the first entrance in the grassy area on the right side, directly across from
the entrance to the bike trail. With trees and grass in the open, unutilized area
what better thing to add than an walking park? This will bring the community
together as well as lighten the load on the Agawam High School track. Persons
utilizing the track will also be able to take advantage of exercise stations and
benches located along the track. This also serves as a warm up and cool down
area for people utilizing the bike trail. They would be able to properly stretch
before and after a longer workout. The walking length would be around 660 feet
(118 mile) and will contain slopes and curves. Upkeep would be done by Troop
82 in conjunction with the Town of Agawam.
About now you are probably wondering who will utilize this
track — all residents of the town. This also expands the current park to an all ages
park. Currently there is a childern's area containing swingsets, slides,
playscapes, and baseball 1 softball fields. This now expands the area to include
everyone above the high school 1 college age. When Borgatti Fields are in use,
persons are also likely to utilize the track before and after games. Coaches would
also be able to create a program that integrates the walking track into their
practice.
Endorsements:
This project has already been presented to many local
officials. The consensus of everyone I have talked to has been overwhelming —
everyone really likes this project. Among the people we have talked to include
the Mayor (Richard Cohen), Deborah Dachous (Director of Planning and
Conservation), Beautification Committee, and Chris Sparks (Director of Parks
and Recreaction). This project has also been approved by the town lawyer.
Please see the attached letter of support by Christopher Sparks (Appendix A —

Walking Park --- Eagle Service Project --- Andrew Jensen --- Boy Scout Troop 82
Design:
Design is by Andrew Jensen with Chris Sparks (Director of
Parks and Recreation in the Town of Agawam) and Debbie Dachos (Director of
Planning and Conservation). Please see Appendix A-1.
Construction:
The construction of the walking track will be done by adults,
Scouts, and local volunteers. We will be using machinery, such as a "bobcat"
(mini bucketloader), donated by local businesses to complete the excavation.
Donation of labor to operate the machinery is a must to complete this project in a
timely manor. All volunteers will be asked to bring small equipment such as
shovels, gloves, rakes, etc. On the night before the construction day, an
informational meeting will be held so all persons will be able to get to work in an
orderly and timely manner.
Signage for and instructions will also be completed. To
complete this task we would utilize a 6" x 4" x 6' post, 6" x 11" instruction sheet, a
6" x %" x 11" Texan cover, two 6" lag bolts and a 16" x 1" diameter steel pipe. The
first two feet of the post will be buried into the ground and the remainder (four
feet) will be above the ground. The sign will be put into a 6" x '/4" x 11" routered
area and the lexan cover will be secured by six square bit screws. These posts
will also have a stretching bar at 16 inches. It will be going through the top of the
post at three inches below the top of the post and three inches above the sign.
For a sketch of the post please see Appendix A — 3.
The track will be about 660 feet long, six feet wide, and four
inches in depth. It will be filled with either P gravel (tiny sized stones) or a bark
mulch.
Construction will begin as soon after the town approval is
received and weather permits. This will be completed before the end of April
2005. The construction of the posts will be done over the winter so they will be
ready to go into the ground that day. All areas that need to be dug will be marked
off 2 weeks ahead of time. For an approximate time table see Appendix A - 4.

To Whom It May Concern:
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter.in support of Andrew Jensen's proposed Eagle
Scout Project. Andrew has approached the Town of Agawam in hopes of donating a walking
trail to the Town of Agawam at Borgatti Field located on River Road.
The Town of Agawam has just completed the first phase of a new Walking/Bike Path that runs
adjacent to Borgatti Field. Patrons of this Walking/Bike Path will utilize Borgatti Field for
parking. This walking trail will give users a place to exercise, stretch, warm-up, and cool-down
before and after using the Walking/Bike Path. This walking trail will enhance the recreational
opportunities available to those who utilize the newly constructed Walking/Bike Path.
The Agawam City Council must approve this donation and the Agawam Planning Board must
approve the site plan. I am going to work closely with Andrew to gain the aforementioned
approvals. Once accepted I will continue to work closely with Andrew to assure that all safety
measures are accounted for while constr)cting the walking trail and that all necessary procedures
are followed.
As an Eagle Scout myself, I am excited to work with Andrew on this very worthwhile project.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comment, or concerns.
Sincerely,
Christopher M. Sparks

Overview:
With the new bike trail recently in place, a fitness area would be a great addition to itl A great
location for this fitness area would be at Borgatti's Field, located directly across from the main entrance of
the new biking/walking trail. In order to get started we need to go to several committees. First, we started
by going to the beautification committee and proposing our idea, then we were sent to go to the town
planner. From there we went to the Parks and Recreation director and we were finally on our way to
approval by the town.
The fitness area would do several things for this specific section. A few being that it would serve
as both a warm up and cool down station, another to draw more people to Borgatti's Field, and it would
also allow people to have a convenient and safe place to park their vehicle while using the biking path.
Another option for the fitness area/stations would be to locate them along the path, mainly in the begirming
and end. Again, allowing a place for those exercise nuts to warm up and cool down.
All age groups can benefit from this project; everyone from teenagers to seniors can enjoy this
area. This park is located in a safe area where people can feel comfortable exercising at.
Going through your head right now are probably a bunch of questions. Well,1 am here to answer
them for you;however, i bet I can guess what a few of them are. Probably some of the following.
1. How much is this going to cost?
1 know this question is ringing through your bead, probably going, "We don't have this in
our budget. . ."To answer the question,it will be of minimal to no cost to the town. The funds
will be raised and lumber and other materials will be sought through donations. In order to give
you a better idea as to what the cost is, l am including a price list of materials in this packet.
2. Who is going to build this park?
Another great question. Who is going to build this park? This is quite an extensive
project. TO answer this question, the boy scouts and other area volunteers will accomplish this
task.We will be asking for the donation of any large equipment if it is needed to assist in the
installations. We will also be asking the local clubs, such as the Agawam Flower Club and local
business for their assistance. In order to accomplish the task of getting volunteers we will be
advertising in most of the stores in our community and neighboring ones, along with a few ads in
local newspapers.
3. How long will this take to be completed from "head-to-foe?"
Unfortunately we can't give you an exact answer since we are dependent on other people.
Fortunately, I can tell you and assure you that it will not take more than that of three full weekends
of solid, hard-working labor from our volunteers. O I can however provide you with an estimated
timeline for each specific task.
Task: Building of Signs Beautification Finalization and
stations complete overview of
project with
necessary
additions/subtractions
Time: One full day App. 4 hours All Days Final day, app. 8
(app. 8 hours all (These will be Working hours
stations will be made and ready
made during the to be assembled)
winter and made
to be assembled
with directions
The approximate total time to complete this project will be around 24-30 hours. Of
course, this all will be dependant upon the weather and the amount of volunteers.
4. How much area are we going to need to build this fitness park?
We will need a beautifully landscaped area with slight inclines and a few trees for shade
along with a river running through it and all of the glamorous things that we can dream of? Well
obviously that would be ideal, but in reality we all know that isn't going to happen. We will take
what we can get and go from there. If we do use the Borgatti Field area we can utilize the area
with the trees in the front of the park This would provide the people with shade(preventing heat
stroke and other injuries)and some feeling of nature.
5. How big does each station have to be?
Depending on which stations we choose to build,it can range from 8'x 8' up to 18' x
18'. The stations in which you will see on the following will mainly be in the 1 O'x 10' to 12' x 12'
range.
6. What will be the surface coverage under and around the fitness stations?
We will be using bark mulch. This is something that is easily replaceable in years to
come and there is no maintenance required.
T What will the stations be built out of
Each station will be built out of pressure treated lumber and all rust-free materials.
Now that I have cohered some of the basic questions I would like to get into more of file
detail of what stations we would like to occupy the fitness park with.
1. Stairs-These are simply what they are called and nothing else.It will probably be four sided with a platform in the middle.
One side will have a very steep incline, another a minimal incline, and the third side will have an incline in the middle and
the fourth will probably be something in the nature of hard to extremely difficult.
2. Hamstring and Quadriceps stretching station-This station will be utili zed in die fashion of stretching both your hamstring
and quadriceps muscles. The main idea of this park is to provide the people with a good cardiovascular workout before
starting on a jog or long bike ride.
3. Balance Beam Walk-This station will be an area to test your balance and coordination. It will be a long trail-type of boards
for persons to walk on.
4. Body Raise/Pull up Station-This station will be used to do body raising exercises and pull up exercises.
5. Leg Stretch/Push up station-This will be an area where you can properly stretch your leg muscles and do push ups to
exercise those much wanted arm muscles
6. Sit up/Leg raise Station-This station will be used primarily to strengthen the abdomens and legs, also to stretch your leg
muscles.
7. Hand walk/Body Dip Station-This station will be used to help strengthen and stretch your upper body muscles.
8. Bar'Iumping Station-This station will be used to help exercise the calf muscles as well as help train people whom enjoy
the sports of skiing and snowboarding.
I hope that you enjoyed looking through this information packet. This would be a great addition to our
town! If you have any questions please email or call me at your earliest convenience.
Thank you,
Erik P. Sense
