DRAINAGE CALCULATIONS Witch Equipment 467 Silver Street Agawam,MA 01001 May 2, 2001 Prepared for: Witch Equipment 467 Silver Street Agawam, MA 01001 Prepared by: Sherman&Woods Land Surveying&Engineering 3 Converse Street, Suite 203 Palmer, MA 01069 MAY Project Narrative Drainage Report Introduction This report has been prepared to summarize proposed improvements at the current Witch Equipment site located at 467 Silver Street(see Appendix A)and to calculate pre-development and post-development peak runoff rates from the proposed improvements on the northerly portion of the site. Witch Equipment proposes to construct an office building on the northerly portion of the above site and a garage addition at the center of the current lot. Proposed improvements include construction of the office building, garage addition, parking lot improvements, construction of a sidewalk and handicap ramp and installation of utilities including water, sewer, electric and telephone and drainage improvements. The existing structures on the front portion of the lot will be removed as part of this project. Drainage,Uggort Site Soils: The existing site is covered by buildings, pavement or soil type MeB,Merrimac, loamy sand. MeB soil falls into hydrologic group A (See Appendix B). Runoff from the existing conditions flows southerly to the paved area around the existing building to the rear of the site and eventually to the brook which crosses the property. Three test pits were excavated at the site at the locations shown on the site plan. Test pit logs are included in Appendix B. Proposed conditions: The proposed drainage improvements for the site have been designed to address the increased impervious area on the north side of the site from the office building and the proposed bituminous concrete parking areas. No drainage improvements have been proposed in the area of the garage addition under the assumption that there is no net increase in impervious area. The proposed garage addition will be constructed within the limits of the existing paved area. These areas were evaluated for peak flows using the"HydroCAD" Stormwater Modeling System using a 2-year 24 hour rainfall of 3.1 inches,a 10-year 24 hour rainfall of 4.5 hours and a 100- year 24 hour rainfall of 6.5 inches as taken from the"Rainfall Frequency Atlas for the Northeast" compiled by the Soil Conservation Service. A siumnary of drainage calculations for existing conditions is contained in Appendix C of this report. The following is a summary of peak flows from each storm for existing conditions: Existing Runoff Year Storm Peak Runoff Ws) 2 0.35 10 1.12 100 2.50 •t. We have met with the applicant and his Engineer regarding the drainage design. An infiltrative drainage system has been approved for this site by the DPW Supt. We have not yet completed our review of the drainage calculations, but we anticipate that this matter can be resolved within the next two weeks so that a Storm Drain Permit can be issued. Also, the applicant needs to sign the Storm Drain Permit application that was submitted. 2. Stone, DPW Supt., File From: Engineering Date: May 17, 2001 Subject: Witch Enterprises -467 Silver Street- SP379 Per your request dated May 3, 2001, we have reviewed the above referenced site plan entitled. "Witch Equipment Site Plan, 467 Silver Street, Agawam, MA" by Sherman and Woods dated 715/00, last rev. 511101, and we have the following comments: I. A Storm Drain Permit is required for this site. In general, we require drainage systems with positive piped outflow and do not allow credit for infiltration. The applicant's engineer should meet with the Town Engineer to discuss the drainage system. 2. Existing'and proposed sanitary sewer rims and inverts should be shown. Also, the plan should show where all existing utilities enter the existing garage building. If there are any existing drainage structures on the southern portion of the property (in the vicinity of the exiting building) these should be shown as well. 3. The plans should show a detail of the proposed water service crossing the existing sanitary sewer. The water service should be at least 18 inches above the sewer pipe. 4. .Proposed roof drains should be shown. 5. The applicant should contact the Conservation Commission to determine whether there are any wetlands on-site that will be impacted and if a Notice of Intent or Stormwater Management Form are required. It appears that much of the site runoff will drain toward the brook. 6. The plan should show details of the-following: curbing, sidewalk and handicap ramp, catch basins including frame and grate, and pavement. I SF-379 May'17, 2001 Page 2 7. It appears that there are unlabeled retaining walls on the south side of the proposed garage in both the east and west corners. It is unclear as to whether these are existing or proposed walls. If these are proposed retaining walls, details should be provided. 8. At least one of the handicap spaces must be van accessible with an'8 foot wide access aisle. 9. The plan should show proposed landscaping. 10. The location of a dumpster and screening fence with gate should be shown if one is proposed. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our division. As the drainage system requires substantial revisions, we may have further comments. Sincerely, Jennifer Grabowski, P.E.
