FIESER AGAWAM --- Take a drive down Elm Street past the former fire headquarters, and you will get a glimpse at what firefighters used in the 1930s to put out blazes. It's a 1931 International fire engine that was used in Agawam for years, and it is soon to be a centerpiece for the city's first historical museum. City's historians originally planned to open the museum on Memorial Day, but much work still needs to be completed. Richard Bellico, curator and archivist of the museum, said several major projects must be completed before the opening, which is tentatively scheduled for the fall. First, stairs need to be installed to link the main floor to the second-floor display room. Second, the first floor must be paved, which will require additional funds. "Financially, right now, we continue to need donations," Bellico said. "We may barely have sufficient funds to complete the needed work." The downstairs also needs to be painted. Bellico said this is a top priority because the fire truck needs to be brought indoors. A group that is donating time to -- Fire A15 02001 UNION-NEWS.Used with permission. Images Of America RoyzRfleg 'T® Fund Yah°e Huse mmeum A project that began as a dream several years ago comes to a close as the Agawam Historical Association announces the publication of the latest Images of America Series Agawam & Feeding Hills, Massachusetts. Association president Rick Bellico was hooked when he learned of Arcadia Press' regional history program where local historical soci- eties can earn a percentage of book royalties by gath- ering the information and having Arcadia publish the book under its"Images of America"title. "We're in the midst of turning the former Elm Street Fire Station into the Agawam Historical& Fire House Museum, so any royalties we receive will be put right into that project." The book got off to a slow start. "We had to work to overcome the `you don't want my family photos' stig- ma, because that is exactly what we wanted. Every photograph has a story to tell and is a part of our town's history," explains author David Cecchi, who serves on the board of the association. Cecchi spent nearly eight months visiting people, gathering hundreds of photographs and reams of information, then working late into the night writing captions for each of the 223 images that ultimately appear in the book. "I had to reintroduce myself to my family after I sent the manuscript off the publisher. My wife and sons deserve a lot of credit for putting up with me as an absentee husband and father." What made the effort worthwhile for Cecchi? "For me, history is about sharing the information you know. I met a whole circle of wonderful people who shared their photographs, their time, and their lives with me. They taught me a tremendous amount about the town I've lived in my whole life and I can't thank them enough for their contribution to this worthwhile cause. That I can now share that information with the read- ers of this book is very important to me. I am not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the most incredible projects I've ever been involved with." The books will begin appearing in local bookstores at any time. However, Cecchi asks that you consider purchasing the book directly from the Agawam Historical Association, as the association earns a much higher royalty from the books they sell directly. The book will be available in the lobby of the Agawam Public Library Monday, October 30th, from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. Other dates will be publicized in coming weeks. Or, you can send a check for&18.99 made payable to: Agawam Historical Association, to Agawam & Feeding Hills, Agawam Historical Association, P. O. Box 552, Agawam, Mass. 01001 along with your name, address, and telephone number. You will be contacted when and where the books will be available for pick-up. For more information, call Carol or Bill Miller at 786-7329. A book-signing has also been scheduled for Thursday night, November 9th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Captain Charles Leonard House at 663 Main Street, Agawam.Author David Cecchi will be on hand to sign copies and answer questions. Copies of the book-will also be available for purchase that night. 5rt0fiffvrber ;,71, -,;1-o rara Gouncil To Hear or Historical Museum Grant by Hope E. Murray Municipal Writer The Agawam Historical Society and Mayor Richard A. Cohen presented a resolution for Town Council approval to apply for a $36,000 tourism grant. The Massachusetts Turnpike Authority 2000 Tourist Grant is available to towns adjacent to the turnpike, and to towns adjacent to those towns. The grant would be used to assist the Agawam Historical Society in continuing its renovations of the old fire house on Elm Street to be the Agawam Historical and Firehouse Museum. °I thought it would be a good venture to use the money for the fire museum and attract visitors to the historic area of Agawam," Cohen said. The museum was projected to open at the begin- ning of the summer, but setbacks in renovations caused the Society to change its opening goal to Memorial Day 2001. "This[grant]would allow us to finish the project and bring [the firehouse] back to life,"Cohen said, adding, SEE MUSEUM GRANT - Page 7 ber 21, 2000 MUSEUM GRANT - from Page 1 "There are a lot of people who travel to see fire muse- ums." Applying does not guarantee that the town will be awarded the grant," Cohen said. "It's very competitive,"added Richard Bellico of the Historical Society. He said that with or without the grant, the museum should open next May. However, the grant would make the process quicker and allow for some"extras" the Society could not otherwise be afford. "It would greatly increase the speed of completion and let us do some things that don't necessarily need to be done for the opening, but would be nice," said Bellico. "We would like to have every 'T' crossed and every `I' dotted. This grant will help us do that." The "extras"include hard topping the driveway and have the kitchen up to code. The latter will be.no easy task. The appliances in the kitchen are all period pieces from the 1920s, including a stove that was used in the movie "Cider House Rules." Former Agawam Fire Chief Russ Jenks and Bellico acquired the stove through Pioneer Valley Auctioneers. Jenks' car, a 1930 Woody, is part of a major hobby of his, antique cars. "Russ also has a restored fire truck from the 20s that will occasionally be on display in the museum," Bellico said, adding that the town's own antique fire truck will also be displayed. Once open, the museum will be staffed by volun- teers. Bellico said volunteers are what have restored the museum, which is located behind the Agawam First Baptist Church on Main and Elm Streets in Agawam Center. "All the work has been done in-kind," he said. The society hopes they will be notified by December whether or not the town will receive the grant. A number of exhibits are already planned, including one on the USS Agawam, a World War II vessel in the Pacific Theatre. Plaques honoring major contributors to the muse- um will be hung and Bellico said he would like to see the museum incorporated into Agawam school cur- riculum. "We have a rich history and a lot of people don't realize that," said Bellico. "This is the whole purpose of tlie-museum." After the public hearings and after a thorough review of the facts presented at the public hearings, along with an"on-site" inspection by the Board members, the Agawam Board of Appeals made the following findings: l. The subject property is located in an area of Town zoned Residential A-2. 2. The subject property is owned by the Town of Agawam and consists of a retired "Fire House". 3. The"Fire House" was built in 1918 and moved to its present location(35 Elm St.) during the early 1950's 4_ The proposed addition to the newly created Agawam Fire Museum will contain a wheelchair lift and a stairwell which is needed in order to fulfill the requirements of the Building Regulations and the Americans Disability Act. 5. The proposed addition will have a rear yard of nine (9) feet; four(4) feet closer than which already exists. 6. Section 180-26, Paragraph B (1) of the Agawam Zoning Ordinances requires a rear yard of twenty(20) feet deep in its least dimension; thus this request for relief. 7. A plan prepared and certified by a professional engineer(Robert Hall, Consulting Engineers, Inc., Meadow St. Ext., Agawam, MA 01001--dated 9-1-98 was submitted to this Board. u -2- Case# 1586 Decision Continued m c 8. Several people spoke in favor of this appeal at the public hearing. There was noCD r opposition expressed or presented to this Board. 9. This Board had found that the proposed addition to the premises will not adver-w1y affect the health, safety or property values of the neighborhood or to the publicin general. CO Based on its findings, the Board is of the opinion that the requested relief is within the authority of the Board of Appeals to grant a Special Permit as stated under Section 180-7 of the Zoning Ordinances. Therefore, by a unanimous vote of its three members, the Board of Appeals grants the Special Permit subject to the following conditions: 1. The petitioner shall construct the addition according to the plans prepared and submitted by Mr. Robert Haul to this Board. 2. This Special Permit allows relief from the rear requirement as stated in Section 180-26, Paragraph B (1) only. All other building and zoning requirements of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Town of Agawam shall be met. 3. The petitioner shall submit a Site Plan to the Planning Board for approval. 4. The petitioner shall have recorded with the Hampden County Registry of Deeds a "Notice of Special Permit" form, which shall be provided by this Board and proof of said filing must be submitted to the Inspector of Buildings. 5. This Special Permit shall become null and void if construction does not commence within two (2)years from the date of this decision. ague 1r 55-5 Debra Curtis 11 S-1yd/ Doreen Prouty i • Town of Agawam 36 Main Street Agawam, Massachusetts 01001-1837 spy` Tel. 413-786-0400 Fax 413-786-9927 MEMO TO: Building Inspector, Engineering Dept., Fire Dept., Police Dept. There is a conflict between the submitted site plan and a survey plan produced by the engineering division on 7/27/98. According to our survey, the building is located approximately 15 feet (not 5 feet) from the eastern property line, and approximately 26 feet (not 37 feet) from the northern property line. This conflict should be cleared before any construction begins. A copy of our survey is attached to this memo. 2.) .The submitted site plan is not printed out to the correct scale.
